"Vanessa’s background is one of wealth, with an emphasis on conservatism, religion and traditional “family values” and roles."

Which makes me wonder if the pressure to maintain traditional roles might not be even greater among the wealthy. E.g., wives of successful, wealthy men needn't work in order to put food on the table or maintain their or their family's lifestyle.

Another powerful story. The barriers India lists are overwhelming and it angers me that such a rich nation does so little to support people with dignity.

I, also am a member of the working poor. I contribute to the Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance....from which I cannot collect, as all my jobs are a hodge-podge of part time hours that effectively block any continuity to amass enough hours to meet the requirements for eligibility. When I "retire"" the CCP will be a meager amount, certainly not enough to meet my basic needs. There are many other women who have worked all their lives that are entering their sunset years with little to sustain them. I suggest that we participate in making changes within the political realms whenever possible, both locally and nationally. Our voices, together can make a difference.

That was very compelling and uplifting because Glenna never gave up. I hope she gets a chance to rest after so much hardship. It's so unjust that someone should work so hard throughout life and have so little in return.

Brooke's story left me exhausted and hungry. How does one in this country of wealth come to terms with the vast chasm between have and have nots?

What a bold and tenacious woman! Despite severe hardship, both in her own country and here in Canada, she has carved out a life for herself and her family. She is right in saying that in North America we hide the poverty.

The story of Chris is hard hitting and hard to listen to. The narrator's calm delivery doesn't hide the terrible enormity of injustice done to a small child, which has so adversely affected the rest of her life. I can only wonder how Chris has managed to keep herself together after all she has been through. When we speak of "strong" women, little do we know just how strong they really are.

Listening to the introduction to the book Policies of Exclusion, Poverty and Health: Stories from the front has me wanting more. It is a tough subject to tackle and I look forward to hearing all the episodes.
